Environmental Responsibility

People value Baldwin County’s natural setting, and Baldwin County Sewer Service helps to preserve it. The health of our waterways greatly impacts our area’s beauty and its property values. Sanitary sewer service can prevent harm to water quality from problematic septic systems. This includes the water we drink, swim and fish in. We work to protect our environment with our operations and in many additional ways.

Sustainability Efforts

We continue to make changes to our operations, no matter how small, in an effort to decrease our carbon footprint.  Here are some actions we have taken so far to become more eco-friendly:
  • Installed a rain barrel to water all of our plants and things on the company grounds.
  • Provide several different reusable items to employees, such as trash and recycle bags for vehiclesgrocery bags and water bottles.
  • Offer reusable water bottles, tumblers and cups to visitors.
  • Send recyclable materials to be recycled through Waste Management
  • Supply a portable filtered water refill dispenser, the Water on Wheels, at community events instead of disposable bottled water
  • Bills, letterhead and envelopes are printed on post-consumer waste paper
  • Display “Please consider recycling this bill” on bills.
  • Encourage employees to do little things like turn off electronics and lights whenever possible, print less paper and double sided when possible and idle less in vehicles.
  • Use hand towels in bathrooms and kitchens for drying hands and cleaning to reduce paper towel usage
  • Use reusable serving ware and silverware more frequently in the offices instead of disposable products for takeout and catered meals
  • Began to donate annually to the Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign, which is a major forest restoration effort with a goal of planting a billion trees across the planet. You can learn more about it on their website. Trees provide so many benefits to our everyday lives. They filter clean air, provide fresh drinking water, help curb climate change, and create homes for thousands of species of plants and animals.
  • We offer electronic forms that save on paper, envelopes and postage.

Education

BCSS dedicates a lot of time emphasizing the importance of keeping grease and harmful materials out of any type of sewer system. Our User Tips site offers a comprehensive guide on system care for our customers as well as septic system users. As it states on this site, we are continually encouraging people to keep grease and other unsafe items out of drains, and we provide complimentary magnets, signs and grease containers to our customers to help with these efforts. Also on the User Tips site, you can find the nearest drop off location for your grease containers to be recycled.

    • As a certified septic tank pumping company, we also guide septic system owners on how to maintain their septic systems.
    • Alongside our mascot Crystal Clean, we offer water quality lessons in schools, in addition to educational, fun games and informative materials at community events.

Environmental Partners

BCSS partners with a number of local commendable environmental organizations to assist in their programs, events, and efforts, including:

Alabama Coastal Foundation | Green Coast Council | Mobile Baykeeper | Weeks Bay Foundation | Partners for Environmental Progress

Environmental Enhancement Program

BCSS works to enrich the quality of life and the environment in Baldwin County by providing environmentally sound options to septic systems with our reliable sewer service. While failing septic systems can pollute groundwater, our sewer system transports wastewater away from properties to treatment plants that return clean water to the environment. Our Environmental Enhancement Program helps property owners connect to sewer service at a discount in environmentally sensitive areas and when converting from septic systems. In addition, in-house financing is available. You can view details about the program here.

Sewer Spill Prevention

We spend a great amount of time and resources educating our customers and the community about how to maintain their septic systems and sewer systems to prevent problems such as sewer spills. Learn how we handle sewer spills and how everyone can help to prevent spills on our Safety site.
