The BCSS held its fifth annual Ornament Decorating Contest this year at Delta Elementary in Bay Minette, AL.

Delta Elementary participated in the contest with recycled items or things found in nature. One of the goals of the contest is to encourage the teachers to think creatively and have the students use these types of items to create the ornaments. We were quite impressed by imaginative students who used materials like recycled bottles, sticks, clothes pins and puzzle pieces to make lovely ornamental decorations in their classrooms. It is the hope of the Baldwin County Sewer Service that our children should learn more about saving resources and recycling in order to better preserve the beauty of our environment and to become more active in environmental initiatives. In December, BCSS mascot Crystal Clean and a few BCSS employees visited the school to judge each class’s ornaments.

Delta Elementary received a $500 donation for taking part in the project, and the winning classes’ teachers and students were also given prizes. BCSS recently presented the rewards at Delta Elementary after the school returned from holiday break in January.

The winning classes were:

  • Kindergarten-1st Grade: Mrs. Kearney’s Class and Mrs. Gore’s Class
  • 2nd-4th Grade: Mrs. Cotton’s Class
  • 5th-6th: Mrs. Erwin’s Class

Delta Elementary Principal Keri Shofner was extremely grateful for the opportunity for the kids and for an easy transition into the Christmas holidays, saying, “Thank you so much for being so supportive of our school! They had a blast making the ornaments. One teacher said the week before Christmas was not as stressful as last year and the children really enjoyed being creative. Thank you for creating a project that allowed them to turn ‘trash into a treasure.’”

BCSS always enjoys spending time with our communities, especially during the holidays, and we can’t wait to work with another Baldwin County school for the contest next year!
